The deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) is one of the most widespread and abundant mammals in North America. It also serves as the primary carrier of Sin Nombre virus, the hantavirus strain responsible for most cases of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) in California and across the western United States.

Although deer mice resemble common house mice, they pose a greater health risk. Deer mice are typically the same size as, or slightly larger than, house mice. They have large dark eyes, sparsely furred ears, long whiskers, and a distinctive bi-colored tail with a dark upper side and a white underside. Their fur is usually brown or gray on top with a white belly and feet.

Deer mice commonly inhabit rural, mountainous, and undeveloped areas. They frequently enter sheds, garages, cabins, RVs, storage buildings, and other structures in search of food and shelter.

Most deer mice breed during the spring and fall. However, favorable conditions can support breeding throughout the year. They build large nests that often measure 8 to 16 inches in diameter. These globular nests commonly contain shredded paper, insulation, dried vegetation, fabric, and other soft materials.

Hantavirus Risk in California

Deer mice can spread hantavirus through their urine, droppings, saliva, and nesting materials. People can become infected when contaminated dust becomes airborne and they inhale it. For this reason, public health officials consider deer mice an important disease vector throughout California.

Deer mice live throughout much of the state. Researchers have identified hantavirus-positive deer mice in 47 of California’s 58 counties. While cases remain rare, they can be severe and sometimes fatal.

Since 1980, California has recorded approximately 99 confirmed cases of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. Health officials have reported cases in several rural and mountainous regions. Mono County has recorded more cases than any other county in California. Additional cases have occurred in communities along the Eastern Sierra, including Mammoth Lakes.

Why Professional Mouse Droppings Cleanup Matters

Mouse droppings, urine, and nesting materials can create health risks long after rodents leave the area. When people sweep, vacuum, or disturb contaminated materials, they can release microscopic particles into the air. Those particles may contain bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants.

For that reason, homeowners should use caution when cleaning rodent-contaminated areas. Public health agencies recommend proper protective equipment and safe decontamination procedures to reduce exposure risks.

Professional mouse droppings cleanup services remove rodent waste, nesting materials, and contaminated debris using established cleaning and disinfection methods. Proper cleanup helps reduce health risks, eliminate contamination, and restore affected spaces.

If you find mouse droppings in a garage, shed, storage unit, RV, cabin, or other structure, prompt cleanup can help protect both your property and the people who use it.
