Understanding Raccoon Latrines

Raccoons tend to defecate in designated areas, known as latrines. These sites accumulate waste over time, producing strong, unpleasant odors. Raccoon droppings are typically dark, tubular, and easily identifiable.

Health Risks of Raccoon Feces

While raccoon feces are not classified as regulated biohazard waste, they pose significant health risks:

  • Raccoons are primary hosts of Baylisascaris procyonis (raccoon roundworm). Infected raccoons pass eggs through their feces.
  • Disturbing a raccoon latrine can cause these eggs to become airborne, potentially leading to serious health issues such as neurological damage, vision loss, or even death—especially in children.
  • Proper cleanup must follow strict safety protocols to minimize these risks.

Before Cleanup Begins

If you’ve discovered raccoon droppings or suspect an infestation, it’s critical to first remove the animals. Cleanup is ineffective if raccoons remain on the property. While we do not offer wildlife trapping services, we’re happy to refer a trusted professional.

Raccoon Droppings in the Attic

Cleanup procedures vary based on attic conditions:

  • Unfinished Attics: These often contain exposed insulation. Urine-soaked insulation—whether batted or blown-in—must be removed, as it cannot be adequately cleaned.
  • Insulation Types:
    • Batted Insulation: We carefully remove droppings from on and around the insulation.
    • Blown-In Insulation: This presents a greater challenge. We typically remove all surrounding insulation to ensure complete feces removal.
  • Finished Attics: These are generally easier to clean due to the absence of insulation. The process is similar to that used in garages or other finished spaces.

In all cases, we ensure that the area is thoroughly cleaned, sanitized, and safe for reentry.
